The leader of Climate Reality, and founder “Bridge that Gap Initiative”, Gloria Bulus, was featured on AMDF’s Weekly Climate Chat #thursdayclimatechat on the topic ‘Carbon Footprint. She explained how Carbon footprint is believed to be an extension of the concept of ‘ecological footprint’ developed by the ecologist, William Rees at the University of British Columbia in the early 1990s.

She said, “Green House Gasses (GHG) is normally taken into account for the carbon footprint. They are converted into the amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) that would cause the same effects on global warming, this is called equivalent CO2 amount, and without Green House Gases, the average temperature of the earth surface would be about -18ºc (0ºf) rather than the present average of 15ºc (59ºf).

According to her, GHG is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range, and the primary green house gases in Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

Bulus described carbon footprint as the amount of carbon dioxide or the total green house gas emissions, produced directly in our day to day activities through burning of fossils fuels, use of energy for electricity, and heating, which can be summarized as our activities on the environment.

On the possibility of carbon footprint reduction, she said ‘it can be reduced by calculating and constant, conscious monitoring of your personal footprint and living a sustainable lifestyle. Which she said involves “going without disposables, reduced bottled and sachet water consumption, support clean energy sources by switching to renewable sources e.g. solar, avoiding products with excessive packaging recycling, eating locally produced and organic food, switching off lights, unplugging any electronic not in use and many other tips will help reduce the rate of carbon footprint”.

Bulus applauded the Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) for the weekly chat and promised support anytime she is called upon.

She said “we must all rise against climate change and other environmental issues to save the planet for the future generation.”
