AMDF, KickStart International and Omni Agrik Specialties train Journalists on Relevance of Smallholder Irrigation Farming in Poverty Reduction

On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF), in collaboration with Omni-Agrik Specialties and KickStart International, organised a session for journalists on the “Relevance of Small-Scale Irrigation in Poverty Reduction.”

The session, held under the Reporting Food Security Project, aimed at strengthening journalists’ understanding of the role small-scale irrigation can play in improving agricultural productivity, enhancing food security, creating livelihood opportunities and reducing poverty, particularly among smallholder farmers and rural communities.

Small-scale irrigation offers farmers an opportunity to reduce their dependence on rain-fed agriculture, extend growing seasons and improve crop yields. When supported by appropriate technologies, access to financing and sustainable water management practices, it can contribute significantly to increased household incomes, employment generation and improved access to food.

The engagement also underscored the important role of the media in promoting awareness of agricultural innovations, amplifying farmers’ experiences and highlighting practical solutions to food insecurity and rural poverty.

Through this partnership, the Reporting Food Security Project continues to engage journalists on critical food security issues, encouraging accurate, evidence-based and solution-driven reporting that informs public discourse and draws attention to opportunities for strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

By equipping journalists with relevant knowledge and perspectives, the initiative seeks to promote media coverage that goes beyond highlighting challenges to exploring solutions, influencing policy conversations and advancing sustainable approaches to food security and poverty reduction.
