Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) received with shock reports of attack against Toba Adedeji a correspondent with The Nation Newspaper, by an officer of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), on Tuesday May 31st while covering a protest in Osogbo.
Local reports say that the journalist was covering a protest by some youths over the death of their friend who was allegedly killed in April by police officers at the popular olaiya junction, near Alekuwodo market, Osogbo, Osun state capital, South-West Nigeria.
Investigations revealed that the officers came to the area and started shooting sporadically to disperse the protesters as the stray bullet hit Toba on the leg.
AMDF is calling on authorities to ensure that swift investigation is carried out and perpetrator(s) are brought to justice.
Authorities at all levels must ensure the safety of its citizens at all times, and insist on proper and professional behavior of security personnel in the discharge of their duties.
Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) is concerned about the safety of journalists in Africa as authorities continue to turn a blind eye to incidences of attack in the discharge of their duty.
AMDF we will continue to raise its voice in support of press freedom and insist that journalists must be treated with respect and should be allowed to carry out their duties without interference or attacks.
The Osun State Police Command is yet to react to the incident.
