Maureen Sheyin is AMDF Journalist of the Month – Africa Media Development Foundation

Maureen Sheyin reports for Freedom Radio Kaduna, North West Nigeria.

She was born on 25 August, 1981 and hails Kaura Local Government in Kaduna state.

Maureen began her higher education from Bayero University Kano where she obtained a Diploma in Mass Communication, then she proceeded to Kaduna Polythecnic for a Higher National Diploma, in same course.

In her 14 years of practice, she covers health, energy, and politics. In her words: “My favourite beat is health while the most challenging is politics”.

“I have gained more knowledge in the field especially on issues of material health, all thanks to the many training opportunities I have enjoyed  from Development Communications Network (DevComs), Family Health Advocates Nigeria Initiative (FHANI) and Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI).”

Maureen said “the inspiration to be a journalists came from my uncle who was a journalist”.

As with most professions, Maureen has contended with challenges of being a female journalist, “there are times when sources withheld information asking me to give in to there request” not deterred she admits, “my passion for the job is keeping me”.

She advices upcoming journalists especially the female journalists to remain focused in the face of challenges.
