Stanley Helon is AMDF Journalist of the Month – Africa Media Development Foundation

Stanley K. Helon has been in the pen profession for about 10 years under the services of Highland FM Jos of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). Through these years he has covered a number of beats, from Youths and Sports, House of Assembly, Special Task Force, Military, to State and National Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA, NEMA).

A graduate of Mass communication from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, in Kaduna North West Nigeria, Helon hails from Mangu Local Government Area in Plateau state North Central Nigeria.

Helon’s flair for journalism was drawn out of the passion to contribute towards nation building.

His words: “the need to contribute towards nation building through the journalist role in agenda setting and ability to communicate to the mass inspired me to be a journalist.”

Having covered a number of beats Helon identifies youths and sports as the most interesting for him while covering emergencies as the most challenging.

He added that the experience so far “has been challenging but worth it as it makes the public to rely on you for accurate, reliable and objective information thereby encouraging one to know something about everything and everything about something. Hence, I have to keep improving my knowledge”.

Helon counselled upcoming journalists “to be hard working by studying hard and not to expect any financial benefits as the work is more of a social responsibility. More so, it’s one profession that has a constitutional responsibility thus the need to uphold it”.
