What We Do

What We Do

At the Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF), we are committed to advancing journalism and strengthening media systems across Africa through strategic, context-sensitive interventions. Our work is shaped by a focus on innovation, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the evolving challenges and opportunities within the media landscape.

Our core areas of work include:

1. Capacity Building

We deliver high-quality training, mentorship, and professional development programs tailored to journalists and media organizations. These initiatives are designed to build professional skills, encourage ethical reporting, and promote responsible journalism.

2. Press Freedom & Journalist Safety

AMDF actively monitors and documents threats to press freedom and advocates for the protection of journalists. We work to ensure media professionals can operate freely and safely, without fear of harassment, intimidation, or censorship.

3. Research & Innovation

We promote research that explores the impact of media on development and policy, while also embracing emerging technologies to address challenges in media production, access, and sustainability. Our approach encourages experimentation and the adoption of new tools and methods to improve media effectiveness.

4. Advocacy & Social Impact

We engage stakeholders—including civil society, policymakers, and communities—to raise awareness and drive action on critical media and social issues such as misinformation, gender-based violence, and civic participation. Media is a powerful tool for social change, and we use it to amplify marginalized voices and promote democratic values.

5. Networking & Collaboration

Through platforms like the African Journalists Network (AJN) and the Africa Conference on Development Journalism (ACDJ), we foster cross-border partnerships and peer-to-peer learning. These networks create opportunities for collective problem-solving and capacity exchange among media professionals and institutions.

6. Information Sharing

We support the growth of the media sector by curating and distributing relevant opportunities, including fellowships, grants, workshops, and events. We also share best practices and lessons learned to encourage continuous learning and sector-wide improvement.

7. Coordination & Sector Strengthening

AMDF encourages collaboration and strategic alignment among media development actors to reduce duplication, share resources, and elevate the impact of ongoing work. By helping to set priorities and connect efforts, we contribute to a more coherent and effective media development ecosystem.
