ICFJ offers webinar to help media get started with low-cost news apps

While many large news organizations have established mobile apps to distribute their content, starting and maintaining mobile apps can often be too expensive and time-intensive for smaller outlets. ICFJ Knight Fellow Chris Guess has developed “Push,” an open source iOS and Android app that is affordable to implement and can help resource-strapped news organizations to reach their audiences on mobile. Setting up an app using Push requires only minimal programming and a few days of developer time. The code is compatible with multiple languages and includes a donation feature.

Journalists worldwide can click this link to join the free webinar with Guess on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. EDT to learn how to use “Push.” Participants will be prompted to download the Zoom webinar platform if they do not already have it installed on their computers. This discussion is part of a series of ICFJ webinars supported by the Dow Jones Foundation. Participants will be able to submit their questions via Zoom’s Q&A feature.

During the webinar, Guess will also share strategies that can help news organizations on a tight budget get started with their own iOS and Android apps. This includes everything from how to make the app work with an existing CMS and how to brand it to when to send out push notifications to maximize engagement with your audience. Guess will share examples from his work with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) in Eastern Europe. He has helped OCCRP and five of its member centers to launch their first mobile apps.
