Burhan is AMDF’s Journalist of the Month

Burhan Farah Hassan is a radio and online journalist from Somalia in the horn of Africa.

He reports for the Somali radio station based in Kenya. Kenya is an African nation that hosts most of the Somalia’s media since the outbreak of the civil war in Somalia.

He is currently working as a freelance journalist. “I control more than 5 websites including my own blog Wardaye Online (Wardaye.net) a Somali website that covers current situation in English and Somali”, he said.

“From 2007 to 2009 I worked at Frontier FM, a Somali radio operating in Nairobi. From 2011 to 2014 I worked at Star FM “Voice of North b Province’ in Nairobi as a radio presenter and translator. At the same time I reported for two (2) well-known Mogadishu based radio stations (Radio Kulmiye and Radio Dalsan).

“For many years, the Horn of African Nation of Somalia was a country where so many journalists were killed, on this stage I worked with and assisted the Committee To Protect Journalist (CPJ) and Doha Media Center for Freedom of Expression to identify and address problems affecting fleeing journalists from Somalia who were lined up at refugee centers in neighboring nations including Kenya.

“I co-founded Center for Peace and Journalism that worked in the initial two years effectively; our aim was to promote ‘Peace Journalism’.

“In 2015 I was mentioned in an article on the Peace Journalist a publication by the Park University, USA. In 2017 I was selected as a fellow of the Bloomberg Media Initiative for Africa at the Strathmore Business School”.

He has undergone many training in journalism ranging from Media Training on Responsible Election Reporting, Financial Journalism Training, Focus on understanding Human Rights, and Data Journalism among others.
